Taittiriya Upanishad Śānti Mantra

“hariḥ om saha nāvavatu। saha nau bhunaktu। saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai। tejasvināvadhītamastu mā vidviṣāvahai॥ om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ॥”

Word-by-word meaning

  • hariḥ om – Sacred invocation to Hari (Vishnu) and Om (the primordial sound)

  • saha nau avatu – May He (Brahman) protect both of us (teacher and student)

  • saha nau bhunaktu – May He nourish both of us

  • saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai – May we both acquire energy (to study together)

  • tejasvinau adhītam astu – May our learning be filled with brilliance

  • mā vidviṣāvahai – May we not have ill feelings toward each other

  • om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ – Om, peace, peace, peace (invoking peace in three realms: physical, mental, and spiritual)

English Translation

“Hariḥ Om. May Brahman protect us both (teacher and student). May He nourish us both. May we work together with great energy. May our study be brilliant and effective. May we not have hatred toward each other. Om, peace, peace, peace.”
